Anytime we are teaching early math we need to cover different parts of number sense. In the following math activities, you’ll find counting, subitizing, games, and more to teach number sense during your preschool Gingerbread theme.
Count and Decorate Gingerbread House
I love the idea of decorating a gingerbread house without all the mess. That’s the idea in this activity, and the kids get some great counting practice as well.
Gumdrop 10 Frames
Learning to count using 10 frames is an early preschool and kindergarten math skill. We loved using gumdrops for this, but you could also use pom poms or colored buttons.
Gingerbread Man Run Game
This roll and race game is fantastic counting practice, but the kids get some great grip strength and fine motor practice as well as they clip and unclip their gingerbread men along the route.
Gingerbread Man Counting
For this gingerbread many activity we counted gumdrops onto our gingerbread man’s tummy. I got the foam gingerbread men from our local Dollar Tree.
Another fun option would be to place actual gingerbread men cookies (or a cardboard/foam equivilent) onto a baking sheet. We would use a spatula for the extra find motor practice.
Gingerbread Race
Games are a great way to practice counting and math skills. We used a colored dice and gumdrops for our game pieces.
Gingerbread Roll & Cover Peppermint
More fun counting practice with dice. Roll the dice and count and cover until all the peppermints are covered.

There are so many fun ways to make these letters. We used pom poms, but you can also use playdough, peppermints, buttons, gumdrops and so much more.
Gingerbread Man Numbers and Letters Sort
We love using our magnetic letters on cookie sheets, and for this activity we are sorting numbers and letters.
Learning about shapes is a skill that helps kid in the future for classification. Here we get to practice shapes by sorting and creating different shapes. We are also working on color recognition with fine with color words.
These gingerbread men need their buttons. Find the correct colors and use giant tweezers to place them on each cookie. It’s great fine motor practice as well as color sorting.

If you have colored shape buttons, they are perfect for this gingerbread man shape sort. However, foam shapes or other small shape manipulatives work as well.

Gingerbread House Candy Patterns
Patterns are an early preschool skill, and here kids get to practice making patterns with candy used to decorate gingerbread houses. If you don’t want to use actual candy, substitute it with pom poms, buttons and plastic candy canes.

They are geared towards the 3-5 year old range. Every child is on a different skill level, so it could work for some older 2’s. I would recommend checkout out the activities first.
