Candy Corn Math Activity

This week we’re prepping for fall with this delicious Candy Corn Math Activity, adding up dominoes and then determining greater than/less than. Candy corn has been one of my favorite Halloween treats since I was a little girl. Basically the only way to ruin them is to put a brown chocolate flavored layer in them. Nasty! My kids love them too, and we thought it would be great fun to use them in our math this season.

I always love to use things we already have around the house in our math activities. It saves me money on purchasing things, and I don’t have to store extra stuff. We used dominoes from the game cupboard for this project. The dominoes also allowed us to do two different kinds of math. First, addition. The kids get to add up the two sides of each domino to find out how many dots they have all together. Second, we used our cute candy corns as a greater than less than symbol to compare two different dominoes.

My second grader helped me out with this one, but I think it would be the perfect activity for kindergarten and first grade. It covers subitizing, counting, adding, and comparing numbers. If you wanted to adapt this idea for older kids, you could also write larger numbers on paper to compare. This candy corn greater than less than symbol could be used for place value comparisons or even more complicated math problems. Just solve and then compare.

Of course my children felt that they deserved the candy at the end, and I didn’t really want them back after they’d been touching them. If I were using this in a classroom I would probably hand each child a zip lock back with 5-10 candies each to use during their math activity. They could eat them when they were finished or save them to take home.
