If you’re looking for a fun way to get some kindergarten reading practice, this is it! There are buttons to push, cars to race, all while sounding out and reading CVC words, working on beginning and ending blends, digraphs, and long vowels. It’s interactive. It’s repetitive, and it’s effective.
I wanted to create activities that practiced slowly sounding out each letter of the word, and then had them saying the sounds together fast.
We chose a car theme, because they are a lot of fun. The racing idea worked perfectly with the different parts of the activity as well.
You can add a 3D element to the traffic light buttons to make it even more fun.
This kindergarten reading activity includes two parts:
First, children get to countdown to the start of the race. They do this by pushing the stop light buttons underneath each letter sound in the word. For example, push red and say C. Push yellow and say A. Push green and say T.
Second, RACE to say the sounds together fast and read the word. The children push the car across the track as they say the word.
CVC Words, Blends, Digraphs, and Long Vowels.
Each individual set includes 63-66 words from a variety of word families. You can give the children all of the words, or only the ones they are currently working on. Just switch out the card each time they finish a word.
THE CVC WORDS
There are 66 CVC words included in this set from 22 different word families. You can give the children all of the words, or only the ones they are currently working on. Just switch out the card each time they finish a word.
THE BLEND WORDS
There are 42 words with beginning blends and 24 words with ending blends. You can give the children all of the words, or only the ones they are currently working on. Just switch out the card each time they finish a word.
Beginning Blends included in this set: Bl, Cl, Fl, Gl, Pl, Sl, Br, Dr, Gr, Pr, Sk, Sp, St, Tr.
Ending Blends included in this set are: Ct, Ft, Lt, Mp, Nd, Nt, St.
THE DIAGRAPH WORDS
This set includes 39 beginning digraph words and 27 ending digraph words. You can give the children all of the words, or only the ones they are currently working on. Just switch out the card each time they finish a word.
Beginning Digraphs included: Sh, Ch, Th, Wh, Qu, Kn, Wr
Ending Digraphs included: Sh, Ch, Th, Mb, Ss.
THE LONG VOWELS
This set includes 63 different words to practice long vowels.
Vowels practiced: a, e, i, o, u, ai, ea, ee, ie, igh, oa, oo.
This Kindergarten Reading set is perfect for literacy centers. It can be done one-on-one, in small groups or even as a large class.
