Racing Readers CVC Decoding

Help beginning readers build confidence with Racing Readers CVC Decoding words through an exciting, hands-on race car themed reading game! This interactive literacy center gives children meaningful practice blending letter sounds together to read simple CVC words while keeping them actively engaged.

Students love the race day theme as they count down the traffic light, say each letter sound, and then race their car down the track while blending the sounds to read the word. It’s a playful way to reinforce phonics skills while encouraging fluent decoding.

Perfect for kindergarten literacy centers, small groups, intervention, homeschool, or one-on-one reading practice, this activity makes repeated phonics practice feel like a game instead of work.

How It Works

Each reading card has two simple steps:

1. Sound It Out
Children press each traffic light as they say the individual letter sounds.

• Red: first sound
• Yellow: middle vowel sound
• Green: final sound

For example:
C… A… T

2. Race to Read
Once all three sounds have been identified, students push their race car across the track while blending the sounds together to read the complete word.

For even more engagement, add small pom-poms, buttons, or other manipulatives to create raised traffic light buttons that children can press.
