Introducing Short Vowel Word Families Activities for Phonological Awareness
As parents and teachers of young children, one of our primary goals is to cultivate a love for reading and literacy. One of the key components to the journey is developing phonological awareness, which is a critical skill identified by the Science of Reading.
In the Short Vowel Activities for Kindergarten, you will enjoy hands – on lessons like:
Word Family Homes: Create houses using building blocks or on colored paper, with each house representing a different short vowel word family (e.g., -at, -en, -ig). Next, write words from each word family on small cards. Finish by having children sort the word cards into the corresponding houses based on their word families.
Word Family Sort: Create cards with various CVC words and ask your child to sort them into the correct word family.
Roll a Word Game: Create a dice with different beginning consonants and another one with different word endings. As the child rolls the dice, they create new words and identify the word family.
