Summer has finally arrived. It’s time to get outside, head to the beach, and enjoy the hot weather, but, there’s still plenty of time for playful learning, and fun summer arts and crafts!
Is it just me, or are summer crafts some of the best? Maybe it’s the bright colors, the beachy vibes, or simply because everything is fun in the summer time!
This rainbow fish craft is no exception. Something about fish crafts just screams SUMMER, don’t you think? So, it’s time to break out the washable paints. Your little ones will love creating these colorful cuties, and you will get some adorable crafts to put on display.
Arts and crafts are great for encouraging creativity, but it doesn’t hurt to add a bit of fine motor skills practice into the mix as well! Incorporate some fine motor work into your arts and crafts with this fun pom pom clothespin painting technique! They are a great project to bring in to the classroom, or to do at home with your littles.
Have you ever tried paint stamping with pom poms? We use the technique for so many fun crafts. It is easy enough for toddlers to create with, and perfect for preschool age children! It’s a great alternative to your usual paintbrush, and is great for dot painting. It has an adorable outcome, but it’s so much more than that – it’s all about the process!

Rainbow Fish Craft
What you need:
- Free Printable Fish Template
- Pom Poms (a medium size is best)
- Clothespins ( any size works, but we use mini clothespins)
- Washable Paints (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple)
- Googly eyes (optional)
To Make the Rainbow Fish Craft:
Print and cut out the fish template. I do this part beforehand, but if the children are old enough, they can do this step on their own.
Attach pom poms to clothespins to make the pom pom “paintbrushes” for stamping. Set out washable paints in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple!
Next, have your little ones dip their pom pom paintbrushes in the assortment of washable paints, and stamp the paints on the fish cutout. This will create the rainbow of fish scales. Cover the body and tail fin with lots of color!
When finished, stick on a googly eye (or draw one on) and let dry. Your adorable rainbow fish are complete. There you have it – a fun and easy craft, perfect to kick off the summer fun in the classroom or at home!
