Arts and crafts are great for encouraging creativity, but it doesn’t hurt to add a bit of fine motor skills practice into the mix as well! Incorporate some fine motor work into your arts and crafts with this fun pom pom clothespin painting technique! They are a great project to bring in to the classroom, or to do at home with your littles.

Have you ever tried paint stamping with pom poms? We use the technique for so many fun crafts. It is easy enough for toddlers to create with, and perfect for preschool age children! It’s a great alternative to your usual paintbrush, and is great for dot painting. It has an adorable outcome, but it’s so much more than that – it’s all about the process!

To Make the Rainbow Fish Craft:

Print and cut out the fish template. I do this part beforehand, but if the children are old enough, they can do this step on their own.

Attach pom poms to clothespins to make the pom pom “paintbrushes” for stamping. Set out washable paints in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple!

Next, have your little ones dip their pom pom paintbrushes in the assortment of  washable paints, and stamp the paints on the fish cutout. This will create the rainbow of fish scales. Cover the body and tail fin with lots of color!

    1. You could do it with either one. Cotton balls are a little more spread out and might not have as neat circles, but they are still a lot of fun to dab with.
