This is one of my preschoolers’ favorite units of the year. They love learning about and even acting out rolls in our community. One of their favorite community helper activities of the week is to take a field trip to the fire station and get a free fire hat. Here are some other fun activities you can do in the classroom.
It’s time for fireman math or practicing dialing 911 or your phone number on the play phone. Build patterns with construction workers. Count marshmallow teeth as the dentist, and play hidden numbers with the garbage men. There are SO many fun ways to learn with community helpers in these preschool activities.
Kids will love this pretend play set. They get to practice dialing 911 with 3D 9 and 1 buttons on this little phone. The set also comes with police officer play figures.
Help the brave firefighters put out fires. Roll dice and count to see which fire to put out next.
Have the children use marshmallows or scraps of white paper for the teeth.
Count the dots and find that number under the trash cans
It’s time to visit the vet. Help the animals line up in order.
Can you build things too? Use pattern blocks to make these cool shapes.
Here are some adorable literacy ideas for community helper preschool activites. You can use real toy tractors for hauling alphabet hay for a more hands on play experience. You could also have children try sorting books onto a shelf by first letter of the title while pretenting to be a librarian.
Here are some fun printable options as well.
Help the librarian get the books on the bookshelves. Match up the lowercase book to it’s uppercase slot, and slide it in.
It’s hay harvest time. Use the correct tractor to haul the matching pile of alphabet hay.
It’s time for more construction. Match up the letters to help the construction workers prep their cones.

Make your own paper plate mailbox and pretend to deliver notes you wrote your name, letters, or words on. You could also use a shoe box for fun mail center for your dramatic play area of your classroom. Here are some other ideas your preschoolers will love.
It’s mail time!! Use a paper plate and these printables to make your mailbox. Then practice writing your name on the letters, and pop them in the mailbox for pick up
Can you help the officers make their road signs? Create the shape out of playdough.
It’s time to build. Can you create these patterns? We used some of our favorite snap cubes for this activity.
For this fun activity, help the community helpers find their vehicle. Whoever finds the most matches wins.
Can you guess who the community helper is? Use the pictures to help you read the clues. Guess the helper, and then flip the card to see if you got it right.
This poor teddy bear isn’t feeling well. Do come color matching to make sure we get his band-aids in the right place.

These fun literacy pages are a great way to learn about various helpers in our communities. Kids can practice tracing the community helper’s name and also identify some of the objects that go with that job. You can then bind these pages to make a fun book of helpers to send home at the end of the week.
You will also want to include other skill options for your preschoolers to work on like tracing, sorting, letter recognition, and color words. They get to work on those skills with these fun easy-prep printables.

What is it you sell? The actual printed stuff and mail it? Or do we have to print and color ourselves? It’s not very clear to me.
