Introducing Phonological Awareness Activities for Kindergarten
One of our biggest goals as parents and teachers of young children is helping them discover the magic of reading. An essential part of that journey is phonological awareness — a foundational skill that the Science of Reading highlights as critical for future reading success.
Kids will build early reading skills with over 80 pages as they practice identifying patterns, blending sounds, and recognizing rhyming words in each word family.
Short E: -ed,-ed,-en-em,-et, -ell,, -eck,-est, – ell
Short I: -ib,-id, -ig, -in, -im, -ip, -it, -ill
Short O: -od, -og, -op, -ot, – og, -ock
Short U: -ub, -ug, -ud, -un, -um, -ut
From rhyming words to working with CVC word families, here are some playful, hands-on activities included in our Phonological Awareness Activities for Kindergarten:
- CVC Word Family Flip Book
Use printable flip books featuring CVC endings. Flip different beginning consonants to build new words in the same family. -
Rhyming Picture Match
Word Family Sort
Use pairs of rhyming picture cards (like “cat” and “hat”). Have your child find and match the ones that rhyme.
Provide a set of CVC word cards and have your child sort them into matching word families (e.g., -at, -og, -en).

I’m looking forward to having students use these this year! I’m planning on using them mainly during small groups, but once we’ve practiced with them a few times, I’m sure many will be able to use them individually or with a partner for even more reading practice.
