A “Question of the Day” activity for early learners involves starting each day with a simple, thought-provoking question to stimulate curiosity and conversation. Examples of questions include:
- What is your favorite book?
- Are you wearing yellow today?
- What is your favorite vegetable?
- If you could be a superhero, what super power would you have and why?
You can begin with simple, yes or no questions for younger learners, and add on to the questions to make them more complex and open ended for older learners. Try asking “why is yellow your favorite color” or “what happens in your favorite book?”
Best ways to use Question of the Day activities:
Display your Question of the Day cards on your board used in circle time or in a pocket chart, or even on you wall outside your classroom.
If you are exploring yes or no questions, you can have a “YES” side with a green smiley face or checkmark and a “NO” side with red sad face or an X. Provide name cards for children or have them write their own name on an index card or sentence strip and they can answer the question and place their name card under the correct answer. This provides a great visual and it also useful in creating print awareness in your classroom.
You can use your YES/NO questions and guide them into more open questions too. Your favorite color is yellow? Tell us what you like abou the color yellow.
